5 Low Waste Back-to-School Tips

As the school season approaches, many of us find ourselves hitting the shops for new academic year gear. A practice that often leads to a surge in wasteful + disposable products. This year, we are challenging our friends to strive for a more sustainable, eco-friendly way of preparing for school. To help you rise to the challenge, here are five tips to help you reduce your waste + make a positive impact on the environment while shopping for back-to-school gear.

1. Reuse + Repurpose Last Year's Supplies

Before you head out to buy new supplies, take inventory of what you already have. Often, last year's notebooks, binders, + pens are still in good condition + can be used again. Repurposing items not only reduces waste but also saves you money. Get creative with how you can reuse old supplies – for instance, you can decorate old notebooks to give them a fresh look or use empty pages from last year’s notebooks for this year’s notes.

2. Opt for Sustainable Stationery

When purchasing new supplies, look for eco-friendly options. Choose products made from recycled materials or those that can be recycled. Brands are increasingly offering sustainable stationery, such as pencils made from recycled paper, notebooks made from recycled materials, + refillable pens. Additionally, consider buying in bulk to reduce packaging waste.

3. Invest in Quality, Durable Items

Instead of buying cheap, disposable items that won't last the school year, invest in high-quality, durable products that can be used for years to come. For example, a sturdy backpack made from sustainable materials or a stainless steel water bottle will withstand daily use + reduce the need for frequent replacements. While these items may have a higher upfront cost, they save money in the long run + reduce environmental impact.

4. Choose Zero Waste Lunch Gear

Packing a waste-free lunch is a great way to minimize your environmental footprint. Ditch disposable plastic bags + opt for reusable containers, beeswax wraps, + stainless steel or bamboo utensils. Invest in a good quality lunchbox + drink bottle that will last for years. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also promotes healthier eating habits by encouraging homemade meals over pre-packaged options.

5. Support Secondhand and Thrift Shops

Secondhand + thrift shops are treasure troves for school supplies + clothes. You can find gently used backpacks, lunchboxes, clothing, + even some stationery items. By purchasing secondhand, you’re giving these items a new life + reducing the demand for new products, which in turn lowers the environmental impact of manufacturing and waste. Plus, you’re likely to find (now) one-of-a-kind items that stand out from the crowd.

Going back to school doesn't have to mean going back to wasteful habits. By making conscious choices + adopting these low or zero waste tips, you can set a positive example for others + contribute to a healthier planet. Every small action counts, + together, we can make a big difference.

Happy sustainable shopping!
