Hello all!

As we venture into a new season, a new month, and soon, a new city, we thought we would take some time to introduce ourselves to any new followers….or to those who have been with us for some time but are not quite sure who we are exactly. 😉

Since 2015, Pantry Products has been handcrafting natural products aimed at contributing to healthy lifestyles. Recently, we began working with Em Deane of Locals Creative to strengthen our message + our brand. Over the next few posts, we will be unveiling our new brand strategy + sharing some of the magic we have created with Em with you. To start, let’s talk about Pantry’s Mission, Vision, + Values.

How do these play out in Pantry Products, you ask? Well, here we go…

We are Transparent
We aim to offer transparency in all aspects of our business. We listen to what our customers want. We strive to help our customers be the best they can. We are clear about who we are, what we do, what we have planned for the future, and what we stand for.

Currently, we are in the process of opening our Salt Lake City production + fulfillment location. We are expanding so that we can craft the products our customers have come to love with faster turnaround times.

We are Approachable
We are here for your feedback, for your questions, for your ideas. We strive to be educators for natural products + for our planet.

We love you all! We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. Our extensive product offerings come from customer suggestions. At our in-house workshops, we work alongside you in crafting your own natural products to take home. (This summer, we look forward to reintroducing our in-person workshops as well as engaging in more community events.) We love to talk natural products with our visitors + we are always willing to provide information on the best products/ingredients for your personal use. 

We are Sustainable
We don’t do it because it’s cool. We do it because we care. We aim to use locally-sourced, non-GMO, and organic materials whenever possible. We work to reduce, reuse, recycle in every aspect of our production + business operations.

There are quite a number of ways that Pantry aims to be sustainable.

Here are some:
– We have recently re-launched our product refill program where we offer a 10% discount on refills of your favorite Pantry Products.
– We offer mask + glove recycling in our Wells Ave. shop
– We have a TerraCycle Beauty Products + Cosmetics Packaging Recycling Box for recycling containers from all your household cosmetics + personal care products
.
– Our orders are packed in recycled boxes with reused and/or recycled materials that can easily be recycled or reused.

Pantry Products' Refill Program

The time has come to re-release our beloved Product Refill Program. While you’ll still receive the same 10% discount when you bring your container in for a refill, we’ve made a few changes to the program guidelines.

Here is our ask for when you bring your empties in:

  1. Bottles + containers must be cleaned + disinfected. If your containers are not squeaky clean, we cannot accept them. 
  2. Pumps + bottle tops must be removed. (Caps for tins or jars can remain on but must also be clean.) 
  3. When you bring your empties in, we will ask you to fill out custom refill form + attach it to a bag provided our team member.
  4. Place your empties in the bag + place the bag in our refill bin.
  5. All refills must be paid for at the time of drop-off. A team member will ring you up with your 10% discount refill discount.
  6. A team member will call you once your refill is ready for pick-up. Please check your voicemail and/or make sure your voicemail isn’t full. 🙂

Items of Note:

  • Due to the increasing cost of soy wax + the cost to ship it, candle discounts will go down to 20.
  • Depending on our production volume + the product(s) you are having refilled, turnaround times can vary 1-2 weeks
  • The 10% discount is offered on refills of the same product.

I’m sure you’ve heard this quote before. Maybe hundreds of times.  Our local, national, + global community is going through (to put it simply) some tough shit. And now, more than ever, we could all use a little extra kindness in our lives. No matter the person, living with + navigating a devastating pandemic is challenging. Our new reality is causing sadness, despair, + even rage. Nerves are frayed, tensions are high. Nobody is immune. We’re all going through it. Spreading a little kindness into someone else’s day will not only lift their mood but it will also lift yours. 

Over the last year, our small business has worked the literal skin off of its fingers to continue crafting + distributing our products. We’ve opted to keep our brick + mortar doors open to provide some sense of normalcy to our local community. To see the faces of our beloved customers + to meet new ones. To greet our delivery drivers with a “howdy!” + a joke. To provide a clean + safe place to shop for everyday essentials as well as some self-care treats. We’ve ramped up our production to keep our wholesale customers (+ their customers) stocked up on natural products they can trust. All while navigating a severely-disrupted supply chain, ever-increasing shipping rates with ever-decreasing reliability + growing requests for us to do more: offer more discounts, have faster turnaround, compete with big box store prices, give bigger smiles, etc. All while dealing with our own stress. 

Recently, our Production Manager, Kayla said to me “I don’t know if it’s something in the air but people have been so upsetti spaghetti lately.” And she is so right. Over the last few months, in both my personal + business experiences, I’ve seen an increase in frowning faces, complaints, demands, people choosing to post reviews complaining about an issue that wouldn’t have been an issue if they had just spoken to someone IRL, people forgetting their manners + feeling like they are owed something. As if only they matter.

We always aim to give our customers top-notch service + our team is doing their best to be smiling-shiny beacons of joy during the chaos that this pandemic has brought to all of us. During these trying times, we are doing all we can to get Pantry Products in your hands. However, the pandemic has resulted us having shorter shop hours, slightly longer delivery turnaround, and limited on-hand stock. But, we are a small business of 7 people. We are not Amazon, we are not Sephora, we are not slapping our label on products made overseas.  This is why many of our customers shop with us. Because we are Michelle, Kayla, Dani, Ang, Rhiana, Dylan + Meg. We are mixing, filling, cleaning, labeling, + packing every one of our 100 products by hand for you. We are here 6 days a week providing our in-store customers, our online customers, + our 300-something wholesale customers with healthy + effective wellness products at affordable prices. We are doing everything we can to make our customers happy because we love + appreciate you. All that we ask in return is for a little of the same.

Holiday Shipping Update 2020

Hello, Pantry fans! Pantry founder, Michelle here. First off, I want to thank you for supporting our small business over the last 5 years (we hit the 5-year mark this past week!). We put our heart + soul into every product we create + we appreciate you appreciating us.

Regardless of the time of year, we understand how important it is that you receive your order safely + promptly. We also understand this importance increases as we enter into the holiday season. Over the last few weeks, I have been intensely monitoring online order fulfillment + deliveries and I am happy to report that, as of today, we have not seen any significant delays in delivery. However, businesses all over the country are reporting otherwise. Therefore, I am writing this blog in anticipation of shipping slowdowns + hiccups as we race closer to Christmas. I hope this information will provide some insight on what happens from the time you place your order until it arrives at your front door.

(Should your order not arrive in time for your gift exchange, we have created this certificate that can be printed out + placed into a holiday card to let the recipient know that their gift is on its way. We’ll no doubt be doing this with our loved ones this year.)

Production Time:
Because we craft every single product by hand, our production time fluctuates throughout the year based on order volume. Add to that a global pandemic that has significantly impacted the supply chain as well as turnaround times for shipping + and our production times have been further impacted. As you can imagine, the increase in online shopping has kept us busier than ever (and we’re so grateful!) but it also means that our production time is a little longer than normal. Please know that our Pantry Elves are working hard to fulfill holiday orders within 2-4 business days of receiving them.

Shipping Method/Shipping Time:
The shipping method selected at checkout dictates the method that your order will be shipped + also the speed of shipment during normal times of year. (This is separate from our production time, which is the time needed to process, make + pack your order.)

Generally, USPS First Class takes 3-5 business days, Priority Mail takes 2-4, and Priority Express takes 1-2 to be delivered. However, because of the backlog of packages the USPS is handling this year, those estimates are pushed out substantially. Unfortunately, we cannot control this, and once your package is shipped, USPS is responsible for final delivery.

So, choose another shipper, you say? Well, the same is happening with FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc. Even the Big Bad Amazon is experiencing holiday delays.

Why is shipping so slow?
There are a few reasons for this.

1. The very, very large increase in customers shopping online this year because of the pandemic has created a backlog all the way back to March/April when stay-at-home orders began.

2. Postal workers being required to follow COVID-19 social distancing guidelines

3. Reduced workforce in post offices + distribution centers as many postal workers catch COVID + must quarantine and/or seek medical treatment

4. Reduced air traffic has directly impacted USPS’s ability to get packages across the country. Instead, USPS is using trucks to transport packages, which results in longer transit times + fewer tracking updates (and sometimes is the reason for a lack of tracking updates).

What can we do?
Sign up for email/text updates directly from the USPS.com tracking page. It might sound like voodoo, but signing up for these updates can sometimes “shake loose” the package. The USPS system updates + starts showing more up-to-date tracking information. The same update service is offered by the other shipping companies. Just click the tracking link on the order completion email you receive from us.

We completely understand the frustration of slow delivery, lack of tracking updates, + having to wait longer than normal for holiday gifts to arrive. We are encountering the same things with our shop orders, base ingredients + containers, as well as holiday gifts for our loved ones. We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to get orders fulfilled in a timely manner + that we hear you, we understand you, and we’re right here with you.

Hey you, long time no see!

We cannot wait to welcome everyone back into our shop July 3rd! While we have been closed for in-store shopping, we are thrilled to be opening our doors, with a few new guidelines to protect everyone’s health! Our amazing Pantry team has been working hard to make sure our little shop is in tip-top shape for our loyal customers. We have been busy organizing + cleaning, while continuing to fulfill wholesale + curbside pick-up orders! Also, we have given our production area (and storefront) a little make-over. Our Shop Assistants can now make your Pantry goodies more efficiently! We promise, our products will still have the same small-batch, handmade charm. Hopefully, there will be a little less of a mess in the process! 😉  Just wait until you see it!

Our main focus at this time is to continue to keep our staff and customers safe. We understand that some of our protocols are different than other businesses, but everyone is navigating through COVID differently. At Pantry, we recognize that health + safety are the most important. While we agree our products are amazing and we want everyone to get their hands on their favorite Pantry gems, our priority is to keep our team and customers healthy. At the end of the day, things like soap and candles are trivial compared to the well-being of our community. Therefore, please note the following information before you shop at our small business:

  • First and foremost, we ask for everyone’s patience and kindness! Our team has been cranking out products as fast as possible, but there are some things we cannot control that effect our production. Also, because of the ongoing changes with COVID, please be patient as we navigate through any new mandates.
  • Our soft opening will be July 3rd-6th from 12 – 4 pm.
  • July 7th – the remainder of the summer, we will be open 10 am – 2 pm and 3 pm-4 pm.
  • We will be closing for an hour everyday from 2 pm – 3 pm so our team can deep clean + sanitize the store. Please carefully note the hours we are open for in-store shopping before coming to Pantry as we will not be making any exceptions.
  • We will be requiring everyone to wear a face covering in order to achieve optimal safety  + to comply with the Governor’s new mandate. If you do not or cannot wear a face covering, please utilize our curbside pickup as referenced below.
  • We will be continuing curbside pickup! Order your favorite Pantry Products on our website +  we will email you when your order is ready for pick-up. When you come to pick-up your order, call the store and a team member will run your order out to your car. Easy-peasy!
  • There will be hand sanitizer for customers to use when entering the store. We ask for everyone to sanitize their hands before touching any products.
  • We ask our customers to give a staff member any products they touch, but decide not to buy. We will then be able to sanitize bottles so they are safe for another customer to purchase.
  • Our staff will continue sanitizing commonly touched surfaces throughout the day, such as point-of-sale systems, counters, door handles, shelves, etc.

As always, there are not enough words to thank our customers for their dedicated support. We know Pantry Products is a place where simple ingredients become a handmade batch of something special. But it’s always humbling to see our customers recognize that as well. It is because of you that we have grown from products being made in a kitchen to a small business with so much potential + love. It is because of all of you that we have thrived and been able to share Pantry with businesses all around the country.  It is because of you that we have seen highs + lows and managed our way here. Here… where we can continue to share something so special, even in the midst of trying times. Thank you for being by our side. We can’t wait to see you!

One of the most steadfast realities of life is that there is brokenness in the world.

Your childhood dogs runs away. A server is rude to you at your favorite restaurant. Your phone gets stolen. There is a consistent, unsettling feeling that these trivial things aren’t the way life should be. Then, the unsettling feeling grows deeper when we witness the injustices of the world that aren’t so trivial. People suffering at the hands that should protect them. Terrible violence. Children going hungry. The constant chatter of the news reminds us of the endless oppression people face. Yet, many of us are privileged enough to be able to change the channel to our favorite TV show and finish cooking dinner. We need to recognize that there are corners of the world and of our nation and cities that need us to get off the couch and help push back against the brokenness. The Black Lives Matter Movement should not be another sappy media story we eventually lose interest in and tune out. May we all remember every single day that there are voices and cries that still need to be heard.

There is so much we can do to keep propelling forward for a better world: having difficult conversations with a loved ones, digging deep to recognize biases, educating ourselves, signing petitions, donating, protesting, and advocating,

If you are feeling stuck or uncertain where/how to use your voice for others in need, here are some kickass non-profits, coalitions, and organizations who are fighting against injustice and lifting up our Black community. Some you may not have heard of, but each one is doing amazing work. Even though you may be seeing less Black Lives Matter content on your feed, the movement is far from over. There is still so much work to be done.


Black Lives Matter is a fighting for freedom, liberation and justice. You can support their work by signing up for updates, checking out resources, supporting their work and following their social media.

Black Lives Matter has a link to petitions on their website that have yet to reach their signature goals. Check it out, support and sign!

Higher Heights is the only national organization providing Black women with a political home exclusively dedicated to harnessing their power to expand Black women’s elected representation and voting participation, and advance progressive policies. Currently, Higher Heights is working on investigating the next generation of political leaders, organizing the power of Black women voters through their #BlackWomenVote campaign and creating an environment for Black women to vote, run, win and lead!

Black Visions Collective in Minnesota aims to center their work around healing + transformative justice principles to develop and raise up amazing + powerful black leadership campaigns.

Black Emotional and Mental Health (BEAM) is a collective of advocates, yoga teachers, artists, therapists, lawyers, religious leaders, teachers, psychologists, and activists committed to emotional + mental health and healing of Black communities: Check out their video, explaining their values and the work they do!

Black Girls Code mission is to increase the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and the builders of their futures through exposure to computer science and technology. Girls are learning to build apps, develop teamwork skills and build self esteem!

Black Mamas Matter is advancing Black maternal health. This Black women-lead alliance is seeking to advocate, drive research, build power, and shift culture for Black maternal health rights + justice. They provide a variety of resources + help support moms before and after their pregnancy.

The Innocence Project‘s mission is to free the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated, and bring reform to the system for their unjust imprisonment.

Black Women’s Blueprint is an amazing Black feminist organization. Their movement highlights human rights advocacy, transformative justice, critical participatory action research, and the cultural preservation of Indigenous people. Currently, these powerful women serve as a resource for sexual assault survivors and their families. Check our their mission and the great work they are doing.

Lastly, there is a seemingly-endless supply of YouTube videos we can use as a resource to educate ourselves!


Pantry Products has always pledged for diversity and equality. We strive to make sure our vendors + partners align with our values, and continue to hold space for all voices, identities and ideas while creating a positive workplace. We have been donating 10% of our weekly sales to a variety of organizations that support our Black community. Our team has been hitting the streets to participate in a peaceful protests, sign petitions, and use their available resources to contribute to fighting injustice. While there is more work to be done, we commit to continuing to reach for justice and advocate for those that need to be heard. Let’s walk alongside one another to make change and not settle for brokenness.


Hello, Pantry fans! We hope that you have managed to stay safe + sane during the global pandemic. We are thrilled to be engaging with you still!

COVID time has certainly not been quiet time for the Pantry Products’ team. While there were definitely days we were wishing for a little afternoon couch time with The Price is Right and a new craft project, we feel so very fortunate to have been able to work up a storm behind our closed Pantry doors!

From crafting our products, fulfilling online + wholesale orders, deep cleaning + organizing, and giving our small shop a make-over, the Pantry team has been working together (at a safe distance) to make the most of this pandemic. Through the highs + lows, we’ve been able to count on each other for ongoing jokes, long conversations, dance party breaks + dog cuddles. We’ve also found comfort in the support of our loyal customers who, even during these crazy times, have shown us that our business + our products are essential to them.

However, everything hasn’t been all sunshine + roses. Running a small business is extremely difficult during “normal” life. Running a small business during these unprecedented times is indescribably difficult. Sadly, we’ve watched many of our fellow business owners struggle with unexpected trials of COVID and of the impact this pandemic has had on the economy. Our heart goes out to each + every one in our entrepreneurial community.

Through these trying times, we have also found inspiration in our small business community. Instead of giving into restrictions + throwing in the towel, we have seen countless businesses figure out how to come together for their town, how to change their business model to support their employees, how to keep doing what they’ve been doing but better! It has shown what makes small business owners a unique breed of human. They’re inventive, creative, diligent, and not afraid to try something new. Tough times call for new changes and if anybody can make that change, it’s your local small businesses. These folks are used navigating through uncertainty to make big things happen – and all with limited funding, limited sleep, and loads of stress.

One prime example of this creative fortitude is, Proper Topper, a Washington D.C. -based Pantry stockist. In business for almost 30 years (yes, 30!!), shop owner Anna Fuhrman, recently had to adapt her retail business after temporarily closing their doors. Anna did so by creating a new subscription box named “Little Box of Wonders”. Each box is hand-curated to deliver the joy of shopping at Proper Topper – the music, the smells, all the feels that make them … Proper Topper. To our joyful surprise, Anna is featuring Pantry goodies in their box! Anna + her team’s perseverance and adaption earned them recognition from Good Morning America! The Pantry team has used this “downtime” to make some changes, too.

If you were to peek into our windows, you would see that our  little shop has been turned a bit upside down. In order to ensure adequate social distance while continuing to do what we do, we’ve adapted the use of our space. Our retail sales floor has become our order fulfillment area and every available (clean) counter top in the back is being used for production.  Our product shelves are intermittently absent as they undergo a refresh (Thanks, Sarah + Dane!) and every open floor space is housing extra containers, packing materials, surplus ingredients, and the occasional shop dog (We love you, Lou, Max, Dean, + Bruce). Starting next week, we will begin rolling out an entire new layout to both our retail + production spaces as well as embarking on a small construction project.

And, while one shop is being put back together, another shop is being taken apart. We have made the difficult decision to not reopen our original store location in The Basement. This is a decision we’ve been trying to make for a couple of years and one that is driven not by a lack of business (we’ve seen growth every year at this location) but more about the difficulties of logistically running two locations with one small team. By focusing our efforts on one location and using our existing team to fine tune our retail + production, we will build an even better Pantry.

And last but certainly not least, nothing would happen without our amazing team. Our crew works hard every single day to to craft our all-natural, chemical free personal care products. With their help, we have managed to help other businesses + spread wellness to our customers. Every product starts in our shop, with a small handmade batch, but they end up all over the country. And these are the hands that make it all happen.

Natural Dry Shampoo

Unlike fairy tales and Hollywood movies, the best dreams do not come to life merely by chance. They are realized when one is open to the opportunities the universe affords them and when someone is not only able to identify a problem but to provide a feasible solution. When someone dares to say out loud that something is missing from the world + that they want to be the brave soul who takes on the challenge of filling the void. This exact situation occurred when Pantry Products’ founder, Michelle identified the need for truly natural, truly chemical-free products consumers could turn to in a misleading and toxin-filled personal care market.

In 2015, upon realizing what was hidden in the mass-produced personal care products on her shelves and how simply these same products could be crafted naturally, Michelle began whipping up health + wellness goodies for her friends + family with items she sourced from her kitchen pantry (in case you wondered where the name “Pantry” can from).

She applied her lifetime of crafting, her nearly two decades in corporate marketing, and her tireless work ethic to bring Pantry from her teeny Reno kitchen to her first storefront in less than 6 months. Since then, Pantry Products has grown to over 90 products, 3 brick + mortar locations, and 100s of wholesale stockists across the U.S. But, not without A LOT of hard work, late nights, and support from her personal network, and her dedicated Pantry team members.

Pantry’s first store. located in The Basement,  was known as The Pantry Vault because it was located inside an old, you guessed it, vault. This teeny space was less than 200 square feet and housed a handful of products on shelves custom-built using copper pipes reclaimed from The Basement. With just one shop employee helping Michelle (when she wasn’t working her full-time Marketing job), this little space was home for retail operations but also product production. Everything from lip balms to hand soaps and face masks to bath bombs was created in this space, by these two. The Vault was where many of our customers first met us, drawn in by the smells emanating from this concrete cave. People tentatively walked in, discovered what we were doing, and selected products to try out. These same people still visit us today and have been crucial in the growth Pantry has experienced.  It was in this space that our photographer, Abbey Kay, first discovered our hand soap + coffee body polish + was instantly hooked.

Within a matter of months, we out grew our beloved (but limited) Vault. When a shop space in The Basement offering better visibility, running water, a closet, and 2 windows (this is huge in a basement) opened up around the corner from The Vault, we didn’t hesitate to snag it up. It was larger than The Vault which allowed us to increase our production capabilities, grow our product line, and increase our staff. It also meant more room for new + existing customers to peruse our handmade wares.

Since we were able to offer more products in this space, we kept dreaming,  growing, and coming up with new ways to push the limits of what we thought Pantry Products could be and achieve. We also enjoyed inventing new ways to decorate our favorite feature: the window light well. It’s seen everything from hay stacks and pumpkins to a fully decorate Christmas tree and 7′ inflated flamingo floatie resting on hundreds of beach balls.  It’s still one of our highlights of this space.

In 2018, we moved into our second Reno location on Wells Avenue. This space was nearly four times the size of our store inside The Basement + it was key in helping to again expand the production side of Pantry Products.  This new space allows to house more back stock to meet the demand from our retail and wholesale customers, provides a private space to host our workshops, + a roomy place to create more products.

 

Our next adventure will be opening up shop in Detroit, Michigan where boss lady Michelle was raised. We are so excited to head back to her roots + to share the Pantry Products we love with the city that she loves. Who says you can’t go home again?
